Madd Style Cosmetics: Death Star Drama

Hi hi hello!  :)

Recently I posted a look in the Madd Style Cosmetics Facebook Fan Page (click here to request to join, if you're not already part of the fun!) and the lovely Barbara requested that I do a tutorial for it.  Low and behold is the tutorial!

If you'd like to find out how I achieved this look:

Please keep on reading!

As always, start out by grabbing your fancy dancy supplies!

Gabriel Color Mascara in "Black", NYX Eyeshadow Base in "White", Madd Style Cosmetics "Optimus Primer", Urban Decay 24/7 pencil in "Zero", Madd Style Cosmetics Piggies (clockwise from the top right): Death Star, Love and Rockets, Psychic Paper, Taransula, and Box of Rain, Brushes: flat shader brush, fluffy crease brush, domed crease brush, pointed smudger, accent/detail brush, angled fluffy brush, big crease brush, slanted liner brush, and last but not least: liquid liner (I use Zuzu Luxe Liquid Liner in "Raven").

Clean eye!  Step 1!

Get some primer and base on!  Primers will help your eyeshadows stay in place throughout the day.  A white base will help give something sticky for your shadows to adhere to as well as provide a blank white base so that the colours really "pop"!

I put on about this much Madd Style Cosmetics Optimus primer.  Then I use my ring finger and smooth it out along the whole lid, blend it up toward the brow, and then I smooth it out along the lower lash line as well.  Next, I do a similar process with the NYX Eyeshadow Base.  I start out by applying it to the center of my lid and then I blend it out along the whole lid and blend it up toward the crease of my eye.  You want to be careful that you don't use too much base--if you do, you may encourage creasing.  You don't want to do that!

Next for some black on the lower waterline and lower lash line.  Try to really "smoosh" this colour into the base of your lower lashes so that you don't see any skin pocking through.  Once you've applied it, take a stiff pointed crease brush/smudger brush and smooth the product out along the lower lash line (photo on the left).  You can also see (photo on the right) that I brought up the product (whatever was left on the brush from the smudging) at the outer corner of my upper lid in a bit of a wing shape.  I'll be adding a dark colour there later on, so having a bit of a dark base will just help the outer corner look even darker.

Now, take a flat shader brush and dip it into the marvelous Death Star, by Madd Style Cosmetics.  Death Star is a super neato blackened navy with crrrazzzzy amounts of silver glitter.  Because this colour is so glittery, you really want to "pat" this colour on.  Avoid "swiping" motions as that will just cause glitter fallout on your cheeks.  So back to the patting--pat pat pat this colour over the entire eyelid.

You want to "shape" the colour at this step however you want the final shape to be.  If you're going for a more rounded shape, you won't want to do what I have done which is to kind of "wing" it out at the outer corner.  Then, take a clean fluffy crease brush and blend along the top edge of Death Star.  This is just to soften the edge, so don't worry about it being perfect.  We're going to be putting another colour right in that place anyways!

Switch to a domed crease brush and dip it into the super bright Box of Rain.  Starting at the outer corner of the crease, you want to "stamp" this colour down.  You want the most colour deposit to happen at that outer corner.  You also want to be sure to really trace the edge of Death Star--don't get too blendy happy with this one.  As you start to get less product on your brush, bring it in toward the middle and inner part of your crease.

Going back to that "clean" fluffy brush, blend away at the top edge of Box of Rain and make sure that where Box of Rain and Death Star meet that it's happy blend and not a stark line between the two blues.

If in the blending process you feel you've lost some of Death Star--go ahead and layer it back in to intensify it again.

Flip your flat shader brush over and dip it into Taransula, a super great dark dark navy (it almost reads black), and pat this colour on to the outer 1/3rd of your lid.  You can also "flick" the brush upwards toward the Box of Rain to make sure the Taransula is blended slightly.

Layering is key with this look.  Go ahead and switch back to your domed crease brush and re-intensify the Box of Rain!

Taking that same stiff smudger brush used earlier, dip it into Taransula (you could opt to use Death Star on the lower lash line instead, but I went with a darker option!), and apply this along the entire lower lash line.

Taking a teeny tiny accent brush, dip it into Love and Rockets--a pretty white with a blue duochrome finish--and apply this to your tear duct area.  Be sure to blend it into Taransula at the lower lash line and up above the tear duct into Death Star.

Using a fluffy angled brush, go into Psychic Paper.  Apply this at the highest arch of your brow and then spread the love along the entire brow bone area.  Blend this down into Box of Rain a bit.  I also like to take whatever product is left on the brush and go along the lower edge of Taransula at the lower lash line to begin to soften that line just a bit.

At this point you'll have somethin' like this.  My lower lash line go a bit lower than I had wanted to, so I opted to apply some concealer under my eyes to help pull that back a bit.

Here I'm using a brush to blend the concealer out along the lower eye.  I blend out in an upside down triangle--and focus on making sure that I "erase" some of the Taransula that got a bit too far down.

And something like this is what you should be left with!

Your last step is to apply mascara to the top and bottom lashes and a thin line of winged eyeliner!  And you're done!  Woo!

For face/lips, I went coral.  Oh yeah, I did!  I applied OCC Lip Tar in "Grandma" to my lips and Gabriel Color Blush in "Apricot" to my cheeks.  I used The Balm's "Mary Lou-Manizer" on the very tops of my cheeks and some Too Faced "Chocolate Soleil" Bronzer to contour.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!  I really appreciate you stopping by and I hope you'll leave me a comment letting me know what you think.  :)  Also--please do let me know if you have any other questions or something that I could further clarify.

Ta-ta for now!
